Replace the oil lines with every new turbo
By far the majority of repeat turbo failures are caused by a contaminated or internally coked oil feed line: the new turbo receives too little oil and seizes again within thousands of kilometres. So fit new oil lines with every turbo replacement — or at the very least flush them thoroughly — and change the oil and filter. Also check the return line: a blocked return pushes oil past the seals into the intake and exhaust housings, causing blue smoke and oil consumption. A faulty pressure converter or solenoid valve causes boost pressure complaints that are often wrongly attributed to the turbo; cheap to replace preventively.
