Master cylinders & boosters

Heavy brake pedal? Test the vacuum first

A hard pedal with mediocre braking performance usually points to the servo assistance, not the brakes themselves. Simple test: with the engine off, pump the pedal a few times to exhaust the vacuum, hold it down and start the engine — if the pedal sinks slightly, the booster is working; if nothing happens, the booster, vacuum pump or vacuum hose is faulty. A hissing sound under the dashboard when braking gives away a leaking diaphragm. On diesels and direct-injection engines a separate vacuum pump supplies the vacuum; check it for oil leaks. Bleed the system completely after replacing a brake master cylinder.
