Volkswagen connecting rods
Volkswagen connecting rods in forged 4340 steel with ARP 2000 bolts, for the 1.8T from the Golf MK4 and Passat, the VR6 from the Golf and Corrado, the classic 1.6 and 1.8 from the MK1 and the 1.9 TDI PD diesels (PD90 to PD170) — the latter also available as a TÜV-approved set with a length of 144 mm.
Uprating the 1.8T and TDI
On a tuned 1.8T the original rods usually become the limiting factor at around 350 hp; the forged H-beam sets (rated up to 800 hp) take that worry away. The TDI PD engines are popular tuning candidates too — and precisely there, high torque snaps a rod sooner than in a petrol engine. Check the pin diameter (19 mm on the 1.8T) and always replace the big-end bearings at the same time.
