Universal tools
Universal workshop tools for everyday wrenching: torque wrenches 3/8 and 1/2 inch (7-112 Nm), ratchet spanners with 72 teeth and extendable handles, impact socket sets 10-32 mm, breaker bars from 600 to 1000 mm, stubby ratchets, adapter sets from 1/4 to 1 inch, compression testers, flaring tools for brake and air-conditioning lines, valve spring compressors and tyre balancing cones.
Seized bolts and the correct tightening torques
Bolts that a garage has tightened with an impact wrench come loose with a long breaker bar — buy one before you start, not halfway through the job. During reassembly, a torque wrench then prevents snapped studs and warped brake discs. Choose chrome-vanadium sockets for hand work and the black impact sockets (Cr-Mo) as soon as an impact wrench is involved; ordinary sockets can split under impact. With this basic kit you can do most maintenance without special tools.
