Turbo actuators & wastegates
Turbo actuators and wastegates: electronic actuators, positioning motors and pressure canisters that control your turbo's boost pressure. The range covers, among others, VW/Audi 1.4 TSI and 2.0 TDI (including T5/T6 and Golf), BMW N47 diesels (320d/520d/X1/X3), Mercedes A- and CLA-Class, Ford Mondeo, Volvo XC70/XC90, Nissan Navara and Land Rover Freelander. Boost pressure complaints without bearing play? Often the actuator
A faulty actuator typically produces fault codes related to boost pressure control (e.g. P0045, P2563), an engine in limp mode and noticeable loss of boost when accelerating — while the turbo shaft itself has no play and the engine does not smoke. On electronic actuators, the gear mechanism or position sensor often wears; you will then hear a rattling noise when switching off the ignition. Before replacing, check that the turbo's VNT mechanism moves freely: if it is seized with carbon deposits, a new actuator will fail quickly too. Many actuators need to be taught in or calibrated with diagnostic equipment after fitting.
