Toyota suspension
Toyota's suspension collection runs from small to colossal: shock absorber mounts and top bearings for the Corolla, Auris, Verso and Aygo, sporty (adjustable) shock absorbers for the Celica, Supra and Camry, wheel bearings for the Hilux, and for the 4x4s — Land Cruiser, Hilux, Tundra, 4Runner, FJ Cruiser and RAV4 — lift kits, raising kits and 6x139.7 wheel spacers.
Hatchback or 4x4: two kinds of maintenance
With the passenger cars it is about quiet wear: a clonk over speed bumps points to sway bar links or control arm bushings, creaking when steering to a top bearing and a growing droning tone to a wheel bearing. Even an indestructible Corolla needs new dampers after a few hundred thousand kilometres — test it with the push-down test on each corner. With the 4x4s, geometry comes into play: if you fit a lift kit to a Hilux or Tundra, check the steering geometry and have the car aligned, and choose wheel spacers with the correct bolt pattern and centre bore. Replace wear parts in axle pairs, left and right together.
