Play or knocking felt in the steering?
A knocking noise over speed bumps, play when rocking the wheel (at the 9 and 3 o'clock position) or worn inner tyre edges point to worn tie rod ends or ball joints. Always replace them in pairs, left and right on the same axle, and have the car aligned afterwards — otherwise fresh tyre wear is guaranteed. Torn dust boots are reason enough for replacement even without noticeable play: dirt and water quickly destroy the joint.
