High mileage? Give your dampers a quick test
Octavias and Superbs rack up high mileages effortlessly, but the suspension quietly keeps count. A simple check: push down firmly on one corner of the car and let go — if it bounces more than once, the dampers are tired. Beyond that: a dull thump when accelerating or braking points to the front control arm bushings, creaking when steering to a strut mount and a droning tone that grows with speed to a wheel bearing. If you replace the dampers, include the top bearings and bump stops straight away; the strut is already out anyway. Always replace in axle pairs and finish with a wheel alignment.
