Droning wheel bearing or knocking control arm? How to hear the difference
A classic on the Focus and Mondeo is the droning rear wheel bearing: a humming tone that grows with speed. A handy test: if the noise changes when you steer through a gentle curve, it is almost certainly a bearing (the bearing on the outside of the curve is loaded). Knocking or rattling over speed bumps points instead to control arm bushings or sway bar links, and a creaking noise when turning the steering wheel to a worn strut mount. On the Fiesta and Fusion, the combination of shock absorber plus top mount is a popular repair: it takes little extra work once the strut is out of the car anyway. Always replace in axle pairs, so left and right together, and check the dust boots and bump stops during fitting.
