4x4 fault or xDrive warning on the dashboard?
If the four-wheel drive no longer engages or a drivetrain fault appears, the transfer case actuator motor is the most common cause — often quicker to replace than you might think. A rattling or grinding noise from the transfer case points to a stretched chain. Compare the OE number with the type plate on your transfer case for the correct version.
