BMW suspension
A BMW stands or falls with a tight suspension. Getting the steering feel back: how to spot wear on a BMW
You notice worn control arm bushings sooner on a BMW than on many other makes: the once razor-sharp turn-in becomes vague and the nose wanders under braking. Knocking or rattling over cobblestones usually comes from the sway bar links, an ever-louder droning tone from a wheel bearing. If the rear keeps bouncing over bumps, the dampers are worn out. On the rear-wheel-drive models it also pays to inspect the rear axle critically: worn-out rear control arms cause nervous, floaty handling. Always replace parts on the left and right at the same time, use new lock nuts and only tighten rubber bushings to final torque with the car resting on its wheels. Finish with a wheel alignment, especially after fitting camber-adjustable parts.
