The four-link front axle: why it pays to replace parts as a set on an Audi
The front suspension of the A4, A5, A6 and Q5 has four arms per side, with just as many ball joints and rubbers. Once one wears out, the others usually follow shortly after; a ticking feel in the steering wheel or a floaty course are the classic signs. A complete control arm kit is then often more thorough and cheaper than replacing individual arms. If you hear a humming or droning noise that increases with speed and changes through corners, that points to a worn wheel bearing. If the car keeps bouncing after a speed bump, the shock absorbers are due for replacement. Always replace control arms, bearings and dampers on the left and right at the same time, and have the wheel alignment checked after fitting: that keeps the steering behaviour and tyre wear in balance.
